A promotional poster for Greg's Anatomy |
Television has been a very popular medium in the
American society for quite some time. Television is an essential tool where
real life situation and fantasies can be depicted in visual form. Recently, many
television producers have venture into some form of the reality genre. Shows
like “Greg’s Anatomy” and “ER” are medical television dramas that attempt to depict
the reality of hospital settings. These shows are very popular and give viewers
an intriguing insight on how people in the health profession field interact
with each other and how they deal with different situations. Although the
medical dramas are designed to represent what goes on in a hospital on a daily
basis, there is still a large amount fiction integrated in the shows. This
fictional displaying gives viewers a false representation of hospital life and
may negatively influence their perception of those individuals in the health
care profession.

The main characters from ER, mostly doctors and physicians |
Most
of these medical television shows place a heavy emphasis on doctors and
physicians, while neglecting to depict nurses abundantly. The are main characters are mostly physicians and they are shown as the people who go around
providing significant care to the seriously ill patients. Nurses, who are
barely even shown in the shows, are shown just standing in the background and
observing as the physicians do all the work when they’re visible. In actuality
this is not accurate. This is part of the process of making the shows more entertaining
by having the doctors, mostly men, be the hero and save many lives. Some would
say there are sexist traits that exist with some of the shows. In the reality,
nurses play a vital role in taking care of ill patients and there is larger amount
in hospitals than shown on television. How much does television representation
of hospitals affect people’s perception of health care professionals?
The topic of medical television drama's and how they are fictionalized is great, especially with the angle on how it affects people's representation of what the medical field is like. This idea is definitely doable and it would be nice to see a comparison of what TV shows make it seem like medicine is in hospitals and what the reality actually is, based on people who you have interviewed. I would suggest interviewing a college kid who watches Grey's Anatomy and see what their perception of medicine is, and also interviewing a doctor who works in a hospital if possible to compare. This is a very popular topic as we all know that TV shows dramatize almost everything to make it appealing to an audience. But, a concern would be that it is hard to find a doctor that has time to be interviewed to comment on what it is really like working in the health field and also possibly able to comment on what they think Grey's Anatomy does to students thinking about pursuing medicine. The audio narration is short, to the point, and conversational. It directly states the title of the blog post and what will be talked about.
ReplyDeleteI thought this topic was very creative and something I wouldn't have thought of. You did a good job in giving enough background information to have everyone understand what you were going to be talking about. Looking at how television portrays the medical field compared to how the medical field actually works will be very interesting to see for most people. This can definitely work as a good project idea and is unique enough others probably won't do anything similar.
ReplyDeleteI think one thing that may add to the topic is including how shows have shaped some of your views towards the medical profession. You could also interview students around campus since many of them have watched some kind of medical show, and see how they thought about the field. You could also interview different science professors that are involved in the medical field.
I thought the best thing about this topic was the fact that it is very unique and interesting. People will want to hear more about it. The con that I see is that it may be tough to get specific facts related to this topic unless there was a specific study done on this or some sort of list of differences between TV and reality.
The audio clip was good and easy to understand. You spoke clearly and did a good job giving a brief overview of the topic.
